RePay International will continue to work with Milieu Centraal to achieve unequivocal standardization in the Netherlands

Standards and cooperation vital for climate compensation projects

’s-Hertogenbosch, 15 October 2008 - RePay International is delighted with the first joint report compiled by Milieu Centraal (“The Environmental Centre”) and Klimaatcompensatie.nl (“Climatecompensation.nl”) which is soon to be published. In this report an assessment has been made of the climate compensation schemes of the various participating organizations. Although the present standards are not as strict as RePay International would like, the company still feels that there is sufficient reason to take further steps in continuing this joint cooperation in order to achieve a Dutch system of standardization for climate compensation. Last year Milieu Centraal took the initiative by working towards the standardization of the various forms of climate/co2 compensation. The responsible Dutch Government Minister, Cramer, signed the relevant Agreement and gave the go-ahead in July 2007. Together, the member organizations agreed to have their respective methods of compensation examined each year by the independent research bureau of Jos Cozijnsen.

RePay International, the company behind the Visa Green Card, is pleased with the endorsement by Milieu Centraal and Klimaatcompensatie.nl of the course it is following. Not only the positive assessment contained in the report, but also the recommendations made in order to achieve further standardization have been well received by RePay. Patrick Bunnik, CEO of RePay International emphasizes the importance of cooperation: “With an unregulated system, it is extremely important to make things open and transparent as quickly as possible for consumers. Milieu Centraal has taken an excellent initiative, as well as an important first step in this direction, and we therefore regret that the report has led to some parties dropping out of the initiative. We would like to state emphatically that the controls on environmental compensation can never be strict enough, and that it is vital to work together in achieving strict standards. We ourselves have all our tools and investments double-checked by reputable organizations such as PWC and TNO”.

Bunnik continues: “We hope that the recommendations in the report will lead to a more transparent and standardized system of working by compensating businesses and organizations. Moreover, I hope that other organizations such as airlines and oil companies who don’t yet participate in the initiative, will see that there is good reason to do so. I would also ask parties who have dropped out of the initiative to continue helping to achieve standardization. Certainly if these parties feel as we do, that the proposed standards don’t really go far enough”.
