Concept behind Dutch Visa GreenCard takes the world by storm under the brand ClimaCount

Den Bosch, 23 April 2007 - The original Dutch concept behind the Visa GreenCard will see it’s global launch under the brand ClimaCount. ClimaCount is the world's first credit card concept to be linked to a climate compensation scheme related to products and services purchased using the card. Holders of a ClimaCount card automatically provide a substantial contribution to a reduction of Co2 emission that is related to products and services purchased with the card. RePay International will be responsible for the international distribution of this credit card, receiving support from PricewaterhouseCoopers. RePay International is a division of Tendris Organisation, an organisation that develops and supports concepts related to corporate social responsibility. As of May 1st, RePay’s management will be headed by Patrick Bunnik, who is currently the Sales Director of financial service provider LaSer Services.

GreenCard, introduced in 2004 in the Netherlands as the result of a joint-venture between Visa and Laser Services, was a huge success from the moment it was conceived. For instance, it was acclaimed as one of the most innovative credit cards by the European Financial Management & Marketing Association (EFMA) in 2005. Purchases that are made using this credit card, ranging from fuel and flight tickets to clothing, will be compensated by the planting of trees, the generation of sustainable energy and the purchase of emission allowances on the basis of the calculations of an ingenious and TNO-tested calculation method. Evidence of the success of this concept is the fact that the monthly frequency of use of the GreenCard is three times higher than that of “regular” credit cards. In the Netherlands, GreenCard is attracting card holders independently. For the global rollout, RePay International will adopt a licensing model that will allow banks and credit card divisions to link the concept to their existing credit cards. PricewaterhouseCoopers will support the launch and present the concept to potential partners in the United States, the United Kingdom and on the European continent. PricewaterhouseCoopers has also been charged with the validation of the compensation methodology and the expenditure of the compensation fees. To provide facility support, RePay International has opened an office in Den Bosch and a branch office in San Francisco. Patrick Bunnik has been appointed the CEO of this organisation: “We are on the brink of a revolution in green consumption. The environment is an important point of interest for consumers, businesses and governments alike. ClimaCount caters for this development by linking climate compensation to a relevant financial service. This international scheme will build on the Dutch success of the GreenCard. In the short term, we will be looking for partners in the financial sector to make sure this initiative becomes a huge global success,” Bunnik comments.
